Technical punto 1.2 8v whine

The wife has a 2000 punto and lately there is a high pitched whine when accelerating in third gear for a couple of seconds and then it stops. Sometimes also in fourth. Any ideas?

does it go if you dip the clutch, and only do it in those gears?

Sounds like it could be tensioner bearing failure - have a search for it on the forum. It happened to my old 55 S and is a really high pitched whine only for a second or two at the same revs in each gear.

Could also be the alternator belt. Mine has taken to screeching for about 20 seconds from cold start after a minute, try both these have happened to my car
