Technical Problem with stick shift

I have my scudo for a week now, and allready a major problem.
I drove the car today for 15 min. when all of a sudden the gearlever doesn't do anthing.

The engine is running, the cluctch is fine, I can move the gear lever stick but nothing happens.
It was in 3rd gear when this happened, so i had to drive the car from standing still to movement in 3rd gear.
Making much rpm and slipping clutch I got home.

I think (i hope it's a small problem) that the mechanical linkage arm from the gear lever to the transmission has come loose...

What do you think ?

Hi Rob. Same thing happened to my 2001 recently. There are 2 cables that the gearstick operates and 1 of them had snapped. I could take it out of gear using the stick but had to put it in gear by using the metal counterweight above the gearbox.


It's not a cheap fix because it's a pig of a job. The cables, yes you have to buy a pair, are a Fiat only part and cost about £200 + VAT and I got my trusted old school mechanic to fit them.


Make sure you get it diagnosed by someone who knows what they're talking about. I broke down outside a transmission specialist, yeah right, and both he and the AA man confirmed that the gearbox was the problem!!

This morning i rang the "wegenwacht". I think you call it the triple A services.
The guys you can call when your car breaks down where ever you are.

he immediately saw that the cable between the gearbox en gear lever has come off. He temporarily put it in place, so i could drive the car mself to a garage nearby.

The garage said it was not too difficult to fix the problem. But he had to order the cable from FIAT (offcourse...).. So this weekend I have to use my bicycle (or public transport) to get around...

2 days later: I got the news my garage fixed it. He had to order a pair of cables. Quite expensive, just as Blue van man said. The cables and the labourcosts are €400 ( £350).
