Technical Problem with rear light.

Hi
I am now the proud owner of a P Reg Merea Weekend, but it has an issue with the N/S rear light. When I put the indicator on the brake light comes on instead and when I press the brake pedal the indicator comes on instead of the brake light. This is only on the N/S and all other lights are fine.

Any advice would be appreciated.

Noddy instructions please as I am not mechanical.

Firstly, are both lamps the same? If the lamps changed during the model life, sometimes fitting late lamps to an early vehicle or vice-versa can cause such issues.

Next, and more likely, is a connection or earth issue.
All the bulbs have a separate feed, but all earth through a common connection. If that connection is poor, the electricity will search for an easier path, through the other bulbs.
Check the connector to the lamp. Make sure it is clean and all connections are good. May need a little work with abrasive paper and contact cleaner.
Do the same with all the bulb holders in the lamp.
If still no fix, you will have to trace the earth wire from the lamp to its connector onto the car body and clean it there. Probably the black wire, but it will be the one that connects to all the bulbs on the circuit board.

Squeak again if not clear.

Good advice from Portland Bill but I would go to the earth connection first. Nine out of ten (possibly more) of problems like this are due to poor earth.
