Hi all
Just having problems the last couple of mornings, when turning the car on, it takes about 3 attempts, and there is a sort of loud grinding noise, could that be the starter motor or the alternator going? I thought at first it was the cold weather affecting it.

I have no clues about cars, anyone help?

I had the same thing on my mk2.
on a warmer day it went.
make sure your anti Freeze is topped up and not ancient like mine was..
Try doing your journey, at the end of it start up and see if it goes. Mine does

Hi,
it's possible it's either..

as the starter need lots of electrical power to engage properly with the ring-gear..that turns the engine,
get the alternator output checked 1st.., should be 14 volts with engine running,;)
then the battery - should be at least 12 Volts with engine off,
Charlie

Hi Charlie
Yes I thought it might be the starter, booked in for a check on Monday thank you :)

Thanks it appears I have a similar problem, on 2 cold days it wouldn't start first time, but get to work park up, leave it for 10 hours worked first time, now this morning, its not cold, it started first time.

Have you had it looked at since or just left it?

Update for you, it was the starter motor, just need cleaning out. thanks again for the advice :)
