Technical Priming a Ducato 2.8jtd

Hallo, have just (very stupidly) ran out of diesel.
Filled five liters in, but van will not start. Its a 99 model.
There does not seem to be a bleeding facillity!
Any advice?

don't know how long it is since you fitted a new diesel filter , but personally i would fit a new one after filling it with diesel , then switch the ignition on and off a few times to prime the system

if the filter is fairly new I would just turn the 'ignition' on and off a number of times without trying to start the engine to pump the diesel up , if that doesn't work would remove the filter , fill with diesel , then as before

I was SURE there is a priming system, and there is: found it when I ran out - a couple of metres of piping that the fuel pump uses to circulate fuel around the system.
So, to prime, turn on the ignition and wait for the fuel pump to do its thing. And only then try to start the engine. Should work after one or two goes...

Here is a link to my earlier post on how to change the Fuel filter on a 2.8 JTD, if yours is a 99 model I don't think that the JTD common rail engines were used before 2001/2 then but same method may work on yours as well.
