Due to Council induced parking chaos locally, a nurse from the nearby hospital pranged my parked Panda. After a month of head gasket and stuck clutch fiascos I was finally back on the road and now this.

It's only the door that's dented, about 100mm up, and about 350mm long, maybe 60mm deep. There's no sharp corners to the dent, so I thought it could maybe be done by paintless dent removal or whatever it's called.

Maybe I could get a new door out of it, as the bottom of it's a bit rusy, if I claimed on her insurance. But I'd feel a bit mean making her loose her no claims. Are you allowed to sort these things out without getting insurance companies involved?

I'm worried the insurance would write off the car, as even a couple of hundred pounds of repairs would be the car's approximate value. Has anyone any experience of such things?

its nicest to not go through insurance for such things i think. tell her you can get a door from a scrappy for 50wuid, and get it sprayed up for 50. or however much you want to ask her for. then she can give you the money and no insurance crap neede. best to draw up an agreement to sign for both of you though, just to confirm shes giving you the money and no legal action will follow, or however you want to put it.
or, you could try get the dent out at a body shop, get a quote and give it to her to pay.

Well i cant see whats wrong with just asking her if she can pay for the repairs, or you pay yourself, but she might be happier if the insurance pays. Depends on what difference it would make to her insurance i supose.

I think technically you must tell the insurers, but what they dont know cant hurt (y)

I've tried to get things from scrappies before, but kept getting told they don't have cars that old any more. (In Scotland, where I'm now living, cars don't last long at all)

I once was quoted about £130 or something for a new door in primer from Fiat when I didn't have anything more serious than a bit of cosmetic rust to worry about...

I'll give her a call and see what she wants to do.

ring around, im sure some scrappies near you will have an old panda...finding a door rust free will probably prove very hard though. sometimes they crop up on ebay, or someone on here may have one.

and what colour?

we have various spare doors - black, white, metallic pale blue..........

That reminds me I need to sort out how I'm going to get hold of those doors and bonnet...

Sorry if I've been leaving you hanging I've been tied up with work and other things at my end.

It's the driver's side door, and the car is dark metalic blue, like Christopher Watson's.

I've had a look in the daylight, and the wing behind the wheel is dented as well.

I've left a message for the Panda basher lady, and I'll see if she wants to get it done on her insurance. Someone drove into my friend's Seat (4 times! then tried to drive off but was stopped by a neighbour) and her car came back in far better condition than she'd ever seen it in...

£178 + Vat for a door in primer off Fiat!!! It's going on he insurance. Nasty Panda basher lady...

We got a quote of £1030 for repair!!! Horrendous. When I finally get through to her insurers I'm worried they'll write off the car....

When someone drove into my car whilst it was parked (almost 2 years ago now) his insurer first said I would be getting all repairs carried out at their centre. 2 months of hassle later they offered me £300 as a settlement. I told them where to shove it and they said to provide quotes of how much the work will cost. I sent them three quotes ranging from £415 to £800 and they paid up and gave me another £100 to apologise for my troubles.

It was hard work though and I had to drive around with a destroyed wheelarch for a couple of months.

Good luck anyway!

Seriously though, if you want anything out of the insurers you really have to work on them. A really long letter finally did the trick for me when I had a prang a couple of years back. If you make yourself a pain they will usually settle, but they write off old cars as a matter of course. And we're all supposed to be worried about the environment...

They " may " want to write the car off but this does not mean it has to be scrapped. Be aware that it is possible to do a deal with the insurance company to accept a lower write-off settlement and keep the car. As the damage to the car cosmetic and does not affect its road worthy state, this should be considered. However, not sure if this applies to your claiming against door basher ladys insurance or if you are claiming against your own insurance. Either way it is worth checking out if things come to that.
Please keep us informed.
Rgds.
