2 questions that often spring to mind when I read this forum (and both on a similar theme).

1a> When you've smoothed your boot, how do you lift it open?
1b> What if the boot release cable snaps or summat goes wrong? - If you've got no lock, as far as I can tell, you're shafted.

2> After you've installed a 2.5million watt amp and a 50" subwoofer cone boot build (ok, I'm exagerating :p) - what do you do when you've got a flat tyre and need your spare?

My bootlid is too heavy to pop up on its own, too much sound deadening! I actually quite like the boot lid the way fiat designed it, smoothed ones look a bit 'wrong' to me.

My amp rack lifts up to reveal the spare tyre :) Eventually it will be able to lift itself.

When you pop the boot you can get your fingers underneath and lift it up (unless you have 3tonnes of soundproofing material ;))

If the cable snaps???? Just like the bonnet i guess.

Most people when designing thier boot builds have made them so they can get at thier spare...

One question to add though, can the Fiat space-saver be used with 17's?

Morrnin all.

1a. I was guna get my rear door insert re-resprayed (since it has faded) so had been considerin a boot smooth myself too. Think instead I might just get the seam filled and then resprayed, so still have something to lift door with (best looking option too I think)

1b. Main thing for me with smoothing lock over too is the issue of how you get in if you've used Marea handles on the two doors and your remote dosn't work! (Am still undecided bout this too)

Re. putting the fiat spare on with 17s (relevant for me also..when the bloody alloys finally arrive in about three more weeks)I think I'm right in saying it's ok, but if its a front one you have to change, then swop a 17 from the rear to put on the front, and always put the fiat spare on the rear

you can use the space saver with 17's, your car won't handle right but they are only supposed to get you to the nearest garage anyway.

part of my intall lifts so i can access the spare, unlike tom i have no plans to automate this! Thunderbirds are go tom!

mine looks like this; basically the sub box and cd changer bit support a lump of copper pipe which the two lifting parts fit over to allow them to be lifted.

wish i'd put on a catch so it holds itself up though.

"If the cable snaps???? Just like the bonnet i guess."

Less of an issue I would have thought because you have some fighting chance to get under the car and get into the engine bay (model dependent I suppose).

I got 2 subs in my boot but the box 'floats' so that I can easily push it to oneside to get the spare wheel out.

Think I'm with Tom on the thinking of smoothed boots, they look a bit 'wrong'. Horses for courses naturally (don't get me wrong, I'm not putting smoothed boots down - everyone has their own tastes) but I think it makes the boot look too blank.

For those cars with 14" wheels - is the spare the same as the models with 15" as standard?

The car won't handle with a space saver no matter what wheels you have on! Saying that I was overtaken by a saab doing about 90MPH with a space saver on it.

Like you say its all personnal oppinion!

I have my boot smoothed and love it! If the cable snapps you have more chance of getting in then the boot to fix it, you can fold the rear seats down and take the trims apart... i would personnally rather fix a broken cable for the boot which is inside the car then the bonnet which involves the bulk head etc in the way! Here is my boot!!!! I to had the same views on the smoothed boot, but i bought my car with it smoothed (very badly done) so i spent some extra getting it done right and now its been done well i love it, there are too many bad jobs out there!

As for the boot instals, i have one in the making, but to be honest, once you have 17's you are better off getting the tyre weld stuff, put a can in the boot incase the worst should happen!

At the end of the day its what you use your car for? i have very little use for a boot...so if i fill it with speakers its no biggy to me!

I agree with you to an extent mate, I think that the edge around the handle should be smoothed, leaving the handle still there ;)
