Hi the Power steering on my partners 1.2 2007 grande punto is intermittent, it fails to work on start up (battery light is lit when power steering fails) switch ignition on and off and works again. I have replaced the alternator after reading that this is a common fault but no joy, any advice on what this could be?

assuming you've changed the battery.

We are talking electric power steering.
These require considerable amounts of power and thus draw very high currents.
Any dirt/oxidation/etc on any of the power route cabling & connectors will cause all sorts of malfunctions.
You need to check and clean all main power feeds to the power steering including earth returns.
