General Power Steering Fault

General Power Steering Fault

I'm sure you have but just in case

Have you checked
BOTH fuses F2 and F24
BOTH 12v power supplies are arriving to the two steering column connectors
the steering separate earth point at C14
I checked the main 12V, So is there an ignition live aswell, if so which cable is it on the connector? Also the main earth seemed fine and fuses F2 and F24 are fine.

steering wiring diag 1.6 2a.JPGThere is a constant battery feed live on connector A pin 1
A battery/alternator on l12v+ supply to connector B pin 1

the steering separate earth point at C14
not the car battery to earth point

I would hope for a "loose connection" fault if any of these had problems but a bad C14 earth would knock things out.

So watch what you're doing as it's a constant live feed but i'd check for 12v at connector A pin 1 and do an earth voltage drop check between connector pin 2 and an earth, looking for near zero volts

Thanks for the above post, I am hoping that when my new "used steering unit" turns up, i can install it and everything work fine. But if not i can test the wiring further. I cant do it now as power steering unit has been stripped out already. So there are many connectors that are disconnected, that could interfere with getting correct readings.

Well I am happy to anounce that the Stilo has power steering again. The new part arrived at about 2pm today and refitting was completed within an hour and i must say, it has been one of the easiest jobs i have ever done on a car and "touch wood" the steering seems fine and to be honest i cant see any need to go to Fiat to get it reset.
Also if anyone is interested, this car is now for sale. 52 reg 1.6 active petrol 5 door hatchback in red, lovely black interior, a couple of small scratches to paintwork, Taxed & Tested, 70K. Offers invited.
