i have got a Stilo 1.6 on a 52 plate. i went to start it this morning and got a power steering fault with the little steering wheel lit up on dash. i have restarted car, but its still there, i have checked fuses and they are ok. So i have no power steering at all. It was perfectly alright when i parked it up last night, but this morning, i have this problem. Are there any relays that could be gone? Is there anyway of checking if its the motor or ecu gone? And how hard a job is it to replace power steering unit, if needed? thanks in advance.

I have checked the battery, all seems fine, car never struggles to start and battery is only about 2 years old, I have also checked voltage from alternator which is 14.4v, so thats ok. I have checked for bad earths, but cant see anything out the ordinary.
I dont know if this will help, but when i started it, it comes up with power steering fault and red light on dash, then when i took the fuses out, it comes up with loose connection aswell. Its as if theres no power going to the motor. I am about to take it round the block to see if it comes back.

Once you get a power steering fault and there is nothing seriously wrong, will power steering come back on its own or will i only get it back when the fault is reset?

The fault will be logged in the computer till its reset, but the dash light will go out after a few starts 5 iirc if the fault is no longer there.

Oh well there must be something serious wrong, as i have started it many times now and still no power steering. Strange how it was fine last night and this morning its packed up.Going to checked connections to the unit. Does anyone know which wires to check for power to the unit? As i would rather check everything else before changing unit.

I have now disconnected the leads to the power steering unit and turned ignition on. It came up with a loose connection fault. Then when i reconnected the cables to the power steering unit, it came back with the power steering failure fault. Does this mean the power steering unit is buggered. If so, from reading other posts about this problem, they mention about noise from the motor and steering been sluggish now and again. But mine never showed any signs of failing. It just appears to of failed in an instance.

I also have a 02 1.6 and the power steering failed.
I had to buy a replacement unit off ebay,Fiat quoted me £917
It was a pain in the arse to replace, where the steering comes into the car from the floor the new unit would not drop into place perfectly.the coloum at the bottom of the unit has a crescent that needs to line up or the bolt will not go through.

Did you have to get it calibrated at fiat? Did it just pack up with no signs of a fault? And is it easy to get the steering wheel off? just worried about airbag.
cheers

Electronic Power Steering Unit

When changing the power steering unit, do you have to get the same part number? or is there a few different ones that will fit as a replacement?

Re: Electronic Power Steering Unit

You will need the same part number unless the number has been superceded.

It will also need setting on Examiner to tell it where straight ahead is.

When the unit has been replaced, is it alright to plug the wires back in, or would i have to wait untill it has been set by examiner. Also are there any precautions that need to be taken with the airbag when removing steering wheel etc etc?

Re: Electronic Power Steering Unit

I believe it is set after fitting.

The steering unit is different for 3 and 5 door cars and there are 2 different part numbers for each depending on your VIN.

There was a new one for an early 3 door (part number 71747908) on eBay last week for £130 that didn't sell. If it's suitable for your car, you could message the seller to see if he still has it.

Damn good price for what looks like the real OEM assembly

if i have 12.3v at the live of the power steering before starting car and a good earth. does that mean the fault is within the power steering unit, or could you have a fault and the other connector prior to power steering unit that could disable power steering? just want to be sure, before i take it out and buy another.

The steering flashed up a fault a couple of times before, but I was able to clear it by turning the ignition off then back on.
the only problem changing the unit over was the damm bolt at the bottom as it would not line up
And I have not got around to going to FIAT yet to reset it

Sure you didn't get the wrong part. They're 3/5-door specific.

Is it possible to test the power steering unit on my other stilo which is a 1.9jtd without fitting it? Just by plugging in the 2 connectors. Or could this mess up my good car.

this probably won't work because the torque sensor won't feel any resistance from your steering mechanism and wheels when you turn the steering shaft.
It's also possible it won't work because it needs to be unlocked (by the Examiner tester) to learn the configuration of the car it is used in.

I'm sure you have but just in case

Have you checked
BOTH fuses F2 and F24
BOTH 12v power supplies are arriving to the two steering column connectors
the steering separate earth point at C14
