Hi guys,

I'v been having this issue lately, I know there are a couple of EPS threads but there's something else. So as I start up the car the power steering works for only about a few hundred meters (a few turns) then the steering becomes stiff, the warning light comes on. Is it rather a battery issue? Because I bought the car two years ago with the current battery and who knows when it was installed. Also now that I drive without EPS when I take a sharp turn (90 degrees or more) I hear a muffled creaky/rattling noise from the steering column what that could be?

Thanks for the tips in advance!

It sounds like a couple of issues. Yes, I agree that the battery is probably the cause of the EPS cutting out because I had exactly the same issue in my MK2b until I replace the battery and it was perfect after that.

The creaking rattling is a bit more of a concern. Do you still get this noise when stationary and moving the steering sharply. If so, you might be able to get someone to assist in trying to localise the source of the noise, my initial suspicion is suspension top mounts...

Batteries dont help.... im getting battery related issues as mines toast when im shunting back onto my drive whilst towing
(Extra lights - engine fan kicks in as towing causes more heat - lots of wiggling the wheel) and mine turns off - restart car and its fine so i know its battery hittin a low spot

Ensure battery posts and clamps are clean too
