Refilled cup with fresh grease before putting it back together and after 10 miles the noise seems to have gone. I'll keep an eye on it for a while but so far so good.

Cheers

Good news. It could be th lubrication or there might be wear in the joint sliding surfaces causing it to lock up. It's likely you have put the spiber in a different position (there are 3) and the wear surfaces no longer match up. If it starts again it's time for a new joint.

The amount of grease that poured out really surprised me, was semi liquid. I only had standard CV moly grease to put back in, I could not get any of the thinned stuff in time. I did not think about alignment of tripod in cup until I'd pulled it to bits despite having looked out some tippex to mark it with so probably not as it came out!

Maybe should have put in the new tripod but the old one had no more movement that the new one and I wasn't liking the plastic caps at all. If it needs replacing in future I'll do it with genuine part.

Cheers
