Just spoken to my dad, he's on his way home from France. With 4 adults and their luggage in the car he said its bloody awful! Struggling to get up steep hills! Since he bought it it hasn't seemed especially quick, just thought it was because I'm used to driving my Bravo 1.8...

Is this normal, we've has diesels before and they've never been this bad?? Really seems to struggle getting up any speed, fine once its there, then it drops off again to soon???

Any ideas? Tom? Nige? He was considering having it angel tuned before it went... think he may well be booking it in now!!!

btw.. the cars a 1999 Brava 1.9 105jtd elx... Think its done about 60,000....

Cheers

If there are no lights, then it will either be a wet air filter or a buggered MAF. Get him to check the air filter first then if thats ok diconnect the MAF, it may help get him home (but he will have an engine warning lamp on).

Lastly I know of a few issues on JTD enignes where the cam rev sensor has caused the engine to cut power and/or cut the engine completely - it thinks its over revving.

Hope he gets home ok

Cheers Nige, just being a bit thick.... whats a MAF???

I knows it's gonna be obvious!! And also where is it?

air flow meter

Nige means your air flow meter. I took my JTD to him last week for a remap as the performance was totally flat and doing my head in. However Nige said in std form they're not that flat and even when he tried to remap it it made no difference - bugger. So I drove all the way home again still in detuned state.

So took it to a Fiat dealer and they diagnosed it as a faulty air flow meter and a replacement cost of £165 plus VAT meaning a total of £195.00 to make it good again!!!!

Apparently Fiat know that the air flow meters are not too reliable but still charge owners for replacing them!

Mine's being fitted on Wednesday. It's pretty hard work getting the car to move swiftly with just one up but with 4 it must be a real donkey.

Your dad could always go to a French Fiat agent who hopefully would replace it for a similar or cheaper cost as they have a lot moe diesels in France.

But that is what your problem is. It might be a faulty EGR but more than likely the air flow meter.

When I took it to the Fiat dealer (Priory in Godmanchester, Cambs) they said it would be about an hours labour charge £55.00 to do a diagnostic and find out whether it was the EGR or air flow meter.

In the end they charged me £33.00 for the privilege of telling me it was the air flow meter that was faulty. Apparently it takes 20-30 minutes to replace if that. They are certain that it will restore the engines performance so
will let you know on weds evening if it is indeed what they say.

Good luck,

Andrew

Chris, the air flow meter has been replaced today on my Bravo 100 JTD HLX and performance has improved quite a bit. Doesn't feel quite as quick as my old TD but has more grunt, especially pick up in 3rd/4th in lower revs and at the top end when on the move ie overtaking.

Hope this is of help.

Next the remap.

A.

Re: jtd

Cheers Andrew. Think my dads got the car booked in to be looked at. Useful to know anyway tho, stops them ripping him off!

Extra pick up at low revs in higher gears is definitely where its suffering, so certainly sounds like this could be the prob.
