Popping noise through speakers

I have a Blaupunkt Velocity va 475 connected to the OEM HU driving Blaupunkt Velocity component speakers. The amp is connected directly to the battery. the problem is that there's a popping sound thru the speakers whenever I power the stereo off. It happens both when I switch the ignition off or if i power down the set by holding down the volume control knob. Will it damage my speakers? How do I get rid of it? Please advise.

Any help on this would be much appreciated, mates.

Have you check that the connections to the speakers are all fine?
Also do you turn the radio off whilst the volume is fairly high?
