Just fitted a BMC CDA to my abarth last weekend. Took her for a spin, sounded great, all was fine. Decided to take a spin on some dual carraigeways to open the car up a bit, got the car upto about 5k in second, went to change to third. BEEP BEEP, engine fault.

Car wont change above second in manual or auto and seems to be in limp home mode. Checked all the connections that I touched, MAF is in right way, wasnt touched really and the lambda one near to it. Cleaned both with contact cleaner just in case.

I connected my ELM up to read the error codes, and came up with the following. Problem is they never clear so the fault is still there. I cant remember which ones are stored or pending.

P0100 - Mass or Volume Air flow Circuit Malfunction
P1654 - ?
P1653 - ?
P0443 - Evaporative Emission Control System Purge Control Valve Circuit
P0135 - Oxygen Sensor Heater Circuit (Bank 1 Sensor 1)
P0141 - Oxygen Sensor Heater Circuit (Bank 1 Sensor 2)

Im going to jack the car up again and re-check everything. Does anyone have any idea of where I can start or come accross this before.

Any help would be great

Cheers

Dan

what car perceives to be an incorrect reading from MAF (based on it's previous experience) can cause your problems.. it may (theoretically) also flag O2 sensors due to too much O2 left in exhaust. Though i may be barking up the wrong tree here - try cleaning your MAF with some alcohol based cleaner and reset + retrain the car (a full description of the process can be found in 1 of my resent posts).

That failing - next point of call (sparing any loose connections/wires) are O2 sensors (from 3 years onwards - it is quite a common for them to go.. and they are cheaper than a new MAF/intake as that'll be about £450). Let us know how you get on pls.

PS: you can try putting the old box in ;-)

Im going to remove and clean the MAF tonight, and re-check all the connections. I still have all the old airbox etc so refitting that was going to be my last resort. I dont think my knuckles recovered from fitting yet lol.

Thing is, some of these errors appear without even starting the car.

Ill have a look when I get in tonight and post back, and if anyone has any other ideas im all ears.

Thanks

P1653 - Power Steering Output Circuit Malfunction (quite common, will appear before start; sorted mine out by dis/reconnecting d20 (under battery fuse box)
P1654 - Recirculation Override Circuit Malfunction (loose connection/broken wire/burned out circuit: not common.. will appear before start)

looks like you've definatelly disloged something (also look at ground and anything near what you worked on)

Did you reset the ECU after fitting the CDA? Might be worth try in case the car is confused over the sudden change in values. This way it'll relearn what's normal now...

I didn't have any trouble with mine and I didn't do anything special :( Try the reset and see how you go (y)

Hi guys,

I tried adaptive reset with diagnostic interface and battery disconnect (over night), throttle relearn everything - still ran like cack.

erm anyway... after hours of swearing, bleeding and 'if it aint broke dont fix it' off the missus - its sorted.

When I fitted the BMC I bolted the other end of the bracket to the battery tray - its not held to well and its allowed the CDA work loose a little.

When I was checking round the MAF connector the other day i noticed some bare copper on the wires near to the connector, I just thought it was the cable covering cracking due to the engine heat but just thought nothing of it. With the CDA being loose it must have grounded against the engine - and blown a fuse.

I visually checked the fuses the other night, in the dark, with a zippo, obviosuly not properly:eek:. I cant remember the number but its second from the right, 15A.

The beast is now running a treat:D. Just put some foam round the back until friday and I will fit it 'properly'. The next mod will be a remap for sure, after the steering is sorted and some new front tyres.

Any suggestions where to run that mounting bar to with the CDA?

Cheers

Dan

That's good news that you've got it sorted (y) I had to adjust mine as well as I was worried about the MAF cables chafing on a pipe. I just rotated the CDA a little bit to clear the pipe.

As for the mounting, I've attached the support arm to the bolt hole located directly under the battery where the old air filter box used to attach. Seems to hold it reasonably steady although there is a little bit of movement but not too much (y)

I think thats what I'll do, turn it sound so the connector is pointing sideways or something, and lag the connector up with some more tape.

Ill have to check under the battery as I didnt even take anything out from under the battery when I removed the old airbox, I bet someone in the past has had it out and never bolted it back.

Thanks again

Dan
