Please help petrol gauge problem

I have a 53 plate fiat punto 1.2 5door when I bought it the gauge didn't work I have tried replacing the sender unit checked all fuses tried 2 dash boards visible wires ok now I'm stumped. Please help and bare in mind the car is not worth a lot so can't afford and don't want to take to a fiat garage.
