hi all, bit of a story this..but il make it painless as i can...

were were having a break and towing our caravan...then at 55mph..there was a medium bang, and the car lost all power ..i managed to coast off the a12 to a safe place....car stopped...no power atall...and engine management light was on....any how...tried to start and she turned over no problem...but wouldn fire up...

rac man arrived...and connected it up to his comp...and it gave these faults...

P1112
P0340
P0101

I noticed that the throttle pedal was about 2 inches lower then it should be???...and when i checked it to the front of engine ..(round plastic thing under bonnet between the wipers) the dial was turning when pedal was pressed...and went back to 'LOW' height...when i turned the dial...the pendal returned to normal height.....

we were towed to our camp site...and had our break...FORDS..main dealers local to where we were 'HAVE NO IDEA' what it could be..even when connected to their comp...cant find a fault....they even phoned up fiat...who couldnt help them......

can any one help please....i will be looking on here for similar answers..

fiat ulasee....2004 2lt jtd deis...

THANK YOU
anton

P0340 indicates a camshaft sensor circuit malfunction. Have you checked that your timing belt is OK? Your description of a 'bang' and the lack of camshaft sensor output could point to cambelt failure. I hope this is not the case but the state of your cambelt is the first thing I would check, given your symptoms.

hi there..

sounds silly really but..the car does turn over with no untoward noise??....wouldit do this with a broken cam chain???..

sounds really really silly but..i would of thought fords/fiat would of found that pretty quickly???...

do u know what the other fault codes are...in on page 16 of the forum searching for answers lol

If the 2.0 is anything like the JTD 2.2 Hdi it's designed so that the rockers fail first, preventing too much violent contact between valves and pistons. A good thing, IMO. A peep inside the cambelt housing (10mm ring spanner, remove top bolt and pry the plastic out to the left) will immediately show whether the belt is doing its thing... if you stick a small screwdriver under the exposed part of the belt it should resist being prized away from the camshaft pulley.

cheers for your reply BW....

would the engine still turn over tho....without ANY dodgy noise what so ever...or would u hear some thing to say.....'oh that doesnt sound good' lol

When the timing belt fails on a 2.0/2.2 JTD the only damage is usually to the rockers. If the belt has failed, I would not expect much noise when the engine turns over as the undamaged valves will be clear of the pistons (with broken rockers they cannot open). I suggest you Google "C8 Centre Edinburgh" for more info.

ohhh thats interesting...thank you for that....

SOOOO IF it is the cam chain thats broken what can we expect to be damaged...and cost wise....ballpark figure???....

is it a case of opening top end up to see what damage has been done...

OR it it a case of replace chain and try it....

CHEERS AGAIN FOR ALL THE HELP

That suggestion of looking at the C8 centre is a very good one - if your cam belt has snapped, they will trailer the car to Edinburgh, fix it and you then pick it up. An in car repair (the injectors will be corroded into the cylinder head, which can't be removed unless the injectors are taken out first - catch 22) they claim will cost £1065 + VAT + £200 head gasket set. If you think that's expensive, the problem is that very few people know how to get the injectors out.

Hopefully yous hasn't snapped the cambelt...

awwwwwwwwwww rats!!!!! cam belt snapped!

have to get it done...as my mother bought the car for us (payed way too much for it) and she also payed for the clutch 3 months ago (£650)...so not alot i can do......FGS i dont rain it pours....

All advice points to "avoid dealers" - they mostly don't know that there is equipment out there (can be rented) which will take the injectors out - and will advise new/2nd hand engine. Engines are over priced because so many are needed. Fiat/Citroen/Peugeot/Lancia grossly over estimated cam belt life at first at 100,000 miles. I think 50,000 miles is a safer option....Remember that C8 centre option, looks like they know what they're doing and will certainly be much cheaper than a dealer! Good luck.

thank you BW i will take note of your advice...and keep this updated....im awaiting a call from themat the moment.....GULP!.

I agree, My 2004 2.0L broke the belt at 60,000 miles and the injectors were very difficuly to remove.

I bought a specialised tool for £350 and did it myself:

Stripped the thread on one injector and had to weld it

I think mine only broke six rockers, very easy to fix once you have the injectors out.

I think you can *rent* a tool too - but I don't think Anton wants to fix it himself. No offence Anton, but anyone confusing a chain with a belt is probably not a mechanic? In his position I'd go for the most reliable option - which would be a specialist.

UPDATE..

well i had a verbal quote over the phone from the fords garage that has the car....and it was a respectable...WORST CASE SENARIO of £1700..so we thought ok lets do this....i also warned them about the injectors being a pita to do.....this was last week.......TODAYS UPDATE IS.......they want £6500 because they broke the injectors...and damaged the head getting them out......

my mrs flew at them telling them that instead of doin it...AND taking engine out to do it....why didnt they phone us....even when WE told them about how tricky the injectors were........we would of said leave it.....

sooo there u have it....we got no car....most definatly havnt got or want to pay the 6k they want...mrs asked to be put through to someone higher..and was told they would phone her back....guess what .....yep they didnt....sooo what to do now...any ideas..?....trading standards..perhaps cos of the verbal contract...pixed off isnt an accurate account of my mood...(mrs is far worse)..

and please no told you so's it wont help matters...lol..
