Noticed when I was at Stanford Hall last Sunday, that all the other GP's has windows made by Splintex. Mine are made by pilkington, does anybody else have Pilkington windows, and if anyone knows, why the difference?
my side and rear windows are splintex and the windscreen and little side windows are pilkington, are you sure yours are not like this? not sure why they use diffrent manafactures for the diff windows though!
Its not uncommon for manufactures of any high volume product to use several sources for certain components. Imagine Pilkington having a strike/ fire/major breakdown at their factory and being unable to supply screens for a month, production of the car would stop when stocks ran out. Having 2 sources would mean Fiat could still get the screens from Splintex and keep production going. Another reason could be the fact that Pilkington or Splintex as Companies dont have the capacity to supply the required numbers of screens on their own, hence the need for Fiat to use 2 suppliers to meet their requirements.
well as a employee of one of those companies i would be very surprised if it is a capacity issue, I would also be surprised if it is incase of a building disaster as there would be multiple sources available. I am guessing it will be simply to do with who ever offered the best contract at the time. i.e pilks was the cheapest for windscreen (or they have better facilities for toughening and laminating the more complex windsreens) and splintex was the cheapest for the side lights. This would also change on a monthly basis due to shipping costs hence the mixture.#
p.s i have pilks windscreen and small windows and splintex sides
