Hi

as the title suggests when i open the drivers window. i get a rather strong smell of petrol filling the car.

i dont seem to be loosing any fuel/power and it all looks very tidy under the bonnet.

is this common?? any ideas???

Keep the window closed.

Seriously - I once had this with a Punto. Filler cap wasn't replaced properly. My fault.

I have the same prob only mines a 1.8! (had a new engine still same prob) :(

Best thing would be to get a cig lighter and check in all the dark spots where you can't see. J/K :)

I have never smelt petrol in mine yet apart from at the petrol station.

Check near the filler cap see if that loose and check the piping near the tank an fuel filter. Other than that, if its really strong get it checked out ASAP. It will only take some daft idiot to throw a cig next to your car for it to go in flames or somebody to be looking at stuff with a lighter ;)

Check the fuel return pipes in the engine bay
On the fuel rail
The hose clips
The original clip did not hold the pipe tight so it leaked fuel
So I removed and fitted a new clip
As the pipe is under pressure be careful not to let fuel go over a hot engine
When I did mine I used some cloth under and a round the pipe
Then put water over it to wash any spilt fuel away

I have just started her up and had a little drive and opened the bonnet. No smells.

all flow and return pipes look fine no leaks

filler cap is bob on

notin obvious

i would like to avoid the garage overcharging me jus cos its a fiat so any ideas are welcome

i replaced my fuel filter yesterday... drove it around.. came back and it stunk of Diesel.. opened the bonnet with it runing and u could head diesel poring out somewhere.

Found the source.. at the bottom of there fuel filter there is a screw in bit.. and u unscrew to let out water deposits... well it'd come loose and was pumping diesel straight out the bottom!

Give that a quick look to see if that's slightly loose :)

silly question time

is the fuel filter under the fuel tank behind a plastic gaurd

(in my defence i am new to fiat)

Cheers

Under the bonnet i'm sure, usually at the back of the engine bay attached to the bulkhead with pipes going in and out.
