I was told that we could not put a registration number that we hold on a retention certificate straight onto the 500 that we are buying under scrappage deal. We were informed that as the number has never been worn by the car that we are scrapping that we have to transfer the number to the new car post registration.

This is clearly not the end of the world but is a pain and I wondered whether the garage has this right or wrong?

Many thanks

Nick

I wouldn't have thought so but I have no professional knowledge of it. Is it not easier to get an allocated plate to begin with that can go back on if you ever sell?

Doesn't quite work like that. When doing a cherished transfer, you pay a fee (80 pounds from memory), the DVLA then provides a registration for your old vehicle, allowing you to put your personalised plate on the new vehicle at registration. Both my Civic and now the Fiat were registered from new with the same personalised plate in this way.

The dealer was more than happy to do this for me, therefore my guess is whoever is responsible in the case of the OP simply does not know what they are doing. If you have the retention certificate, then it is simply sent to the DVLA with the appropriate form.

Yes you are correct that at least I will get a free set of plates to keep for when I eventually sell. In some ways that is actually quite helpful - its just that my wife does not see it that way as she wants her number from the start....

I have been through this many times before without any hassle - it seems odd that we have been told that it is different for scrappage deals - I don't understand why if it is indeed the case??

Indeed. To use the dealer's logic, it would mean that every car being purchased under scrappage should have the same number plate as the car being scrapped. Why would I want my brand new car to look a minimum of 10 years old? The plate should be irrelevant provided the car being traded in fits the criteria for the scrappage scheme.

I purchased my registration number from the dvla in November and had my new car registered with the number when the car arrived in January. The car was purchased under the scrappage scheme. No problem

Yes as I too can't see what difference it could possibly make to the ethos of scrappage what number the new car is first registered with. I have the retention document in the same name as the new car will be registered in which is the same name as the scrap car is registered to. Ie everything is in order.

I will try to call DVLA to hopefully lay this matter to rest

Thanks

Nick

Thanks as that info is helpful and encouraging - I now suspect the dealer must have it wrong.....

Utter rubbish. Using the scrappage deal, I ordered my car in August, chose my new number in September and simply took the certificate in to the dealer 48 hours before I picked up the car so that they could get the plates ready. If your sales person won't do this, first ask to speak to the manager, then get them to contact Mill Lane Fiat in Aldershot on 01252 322002 for advice.

I second the above, did exactly the same. Whoever you are dealing with does not know what they are talking about. :bang:

Thanks all - I will speak to the dealer again but I guess we have plenty of time:(

I can assure you, as a DVLA employee and FIat owner, that your dealer is talking out of the wrong part of their body!! There is no problem as many above have stated. You will need your green retention certificate (V778) and the dealer will need to register the car at their nearest DVLA office instead of in the dealership.
