I have a 2000, 2.8 id TD motorhome. It has covered only 22,000 miles (22k). Has been serviced when i bought it 3 years ago and had an oil and filter change last year. Vehicle plated at 3500kg.

Problem being it starts and drives okay, but i'm sure that i have lost power somewhere ? While driving to Cornwall a fortnight ago, it just seems slugish.

To be honest I cant remember hearing the whistle of the turbo for months thinking about it.

Being an inexperianced mechanic would my engine work without the turbo working ?

A friends transit  turbo went on his van then 3 days later the engine started smoking etc, this has'nt happened to my van and if driven 600 miles in the last fornight :D

I wouldn't expect to hear any whistle in a good turbo. At low miles like that the only way I could see the turbo being damaged is if it was run with bad oil, run with no air filter (unbelievable but people do), there was a split in the intake pipe, aftermarket induction kit fitted.

At low miles loss in power I'd look for split or loose pipe between the turbo and intercooler or between intercooler and manifold, check the intercooler for damage as its just inside the grille.

If you're paranoid about the turbo. Remove the central pipe from the compressor side of the turbo and check the condition of the compressor vane, then catch the nut on the compressor vane with thumb and forefinger and check for axial play (in and out) should basically be zero, and radial play up down left and right (should be a tiny amount)

Your diesel pump may have a cold start device that has got stuck too. Stick up your vin number and we can check.

Corkman do you have any pictures of the central line and compressor vane ?
This would make a good sticky as I think a lot of other slugish campers would like to check their turbos :)

Many Thanks

Hi, I have the exact same vehicle with the same problem it will not pull up even the slightest incline , taking it in tomorrow to have the turbo checked. Have you solved your problem ? I will let you know my outcome tomorrow.

edy, whats the news ?

Was speaking to a farmer who has a huge background in mechanics, and he said cheapest fix is DIESEL FILTER.

Because i use the motorhome rarly, i have a scoter for everyday use, i have on more than one occasion used the van while the fuel light has been on !

The price on the filter is about £15.

The only thing i got to do now is get somone to fit it !

Hi
You would be very unlucky to have a turbo problem at 22,000 miles.
I would look at the turbo pipe work though for splits or loose connections.
Cheap supermarket diesel will lose you a lot of powers if you’ve been using it; try some B.P or Esso derv.
