Hi, haven't been here for a long time and now I have an idea. I want to put Panda's 1100 engine instead of 900 OHV in my SEAT Marbella. The main question is whether it is possible to fit that engine to Marbella's gearbox naturally. I reckon if it is the same Panda's 5-speed box, then the connection between engine and gearbox could be the same. Help please, I hope that some Panda expert will now that sort of details.

....and the reason for leaving the original 'box is the fact it is so nice and precise, so it is impossible that FIAT's is better - they could act exactly the same, but I'm worried that VW involved after purchasing SEAT, so....plus, I want to cut the costs as much as possible....I will remind that this is latest 1,1 55 ks FIRE that I would like to have in my SEAT.

yeah, BELLHOUSING is the word I was looking for. The bellhousing depends on the gearbox as fas as I know, so if 'box is the same, in most cases it is likely that it is the same for all engines in the range....I hope it is the case here....but I'm afraid it is possible it isn't.

If it turns out to be so, I'd like to know how to connect it, what could be done?

The Marbella gearbox won't fit on a panda FIRE engine I am afraid. But you can get an adaptor plate made up. Something that has been shown on here before so might be worth searching the forum for this.

Best to buy an engine and gearbox complete. This will require less changes.

2nd problem is gearbox mounting position / bracket is different so you would then have a little trouble fitting the FIRE gearbox to the Marbella chassis.

In my opinion it is a lot of work for not much improvement in performance.

but some useful links for you...
Alixcompo has done a nice job on fitting a FIRE engine into an early Panda (like the marbella) here.

And I put a lancia y10 turbo engine (with gearbox the same as fiat panda) into a marbella - the part with engine mounts is here

Hope this helps!

Thanx a lot ;). Firstly, I should ask more precisely - I know about the plates, but I wander how is it made?
Alixcompo was making 4x4 version as I can see. Still, that mounting issue - if you get different 'box, I suppose you need to change mounts or something?

Performance wise - you are right, 15 hp won't show up to 60 kmh (40mph), but the torque will and FIRE is much quieter engine. Mine is louder than it should be because upper valve lifter shaft (OHV configuration) rattles and I couldn't find the spare that wasn't ruined as well, so it produces more noise.

Saw your work. You mentioned problems because Marbella's box was smaller than Lancia's. Is Panda's 'box also a bit bigger? And I haven't found is it any different than 5-speeder in first OHV Panda 45?

Hi again,

I can confirm that a panda box is the same as a lancia y10 box. Even the lancia Y10 turbo 1049cc I am reasonably sure is the same.

Panda FIRE 4wd gearbox has the same mounting as the panda FIRE 2wd so Alixcompo's work is applicable to putting a FIRE engine and box into a 2wd Marbella also. But if anyone knows better, please feel free to correct me of course!

Thanx again, I'm a bit sad that it needs gearbox from Panda so it is likely I will quit because it seems more expensive than it should be in my mind. Do you know how hard is to make 'personalised' plate between engine and 'box?

Found it!! 40 minutes well spent! (it was an older post than I thought  )

Here there are some details. And some suggestions of where to find it from our friend Bartpanda!

Perhaps not completely the end of the story for you.
