In my defence as a complete knob I just asked the head place to sort out the valves, I didn't know the difference between fitting seals and the grinding - I do now about sixty quid!
So do I have to put the cam back on the head to have the shims sorted?
Please answer in words of a maximum of two syllabubs.

Absolutely..
sorry, I mean yes. You're measuring the clearance between the cam lobes and the shims, if that clearance is several metres to the other side of the room you'll be ordering a truly massive shim;)

The "shim" is a metal disk that sits in the top of the cup that sits on top of the valve. It's the bit the cam runs on. You measure the gap between this and the back of the cam lobe. From this and the thickness of the existing shim (marked on it or measured) you can calculate the required thickness for the new shim.
Not too bad on a 8v top shim engine. First time I did it was in a Lotus 2l twin cam 16v with the shims under the cups.

Will the 4x4 cam give it a power boost over standard or stick with what I've got?

Is the Parade injected? if so it might have the hotter cam already, check for stamp between cyl 1 and 2 lobes.

Power increase - not as much - I've noticed the difference as it seems to be more torque lower down.

Parade is indeed injected, took the cam and head back to the shop to have the shims ground, won't be ready until Friday PM though.

That's my get away plans for a couple of nights banjaxed as I'm back at work on Sunday.

They are going to GRIND the shims? That's not normal practice. They are normally only surface hardened so you can't grind the face the cam rubs on. I suppose you could grind the underside, but in either case it would have to be done on something accurate like a surface grinder with a magnetic chuck. A decent machine shop should have a surface grinder, but its still a bit odd. Did they say how thay were going to do it?

Well the heads on, unfortunately the borrowed torque wrench didn't go down to the puny amounts of that the engine requires so another trip to to Toolstation was needed. - I think I've been there everyday this week so far. Bolts bolted, cam cover on too - even found the high temperature sealant stuff to blob the weak spots and I've run out of day light!

I'm jumping ahead here but I'm really anxious about doing the timing, the belt is due to arrive on Saturday - thanks to amazons next day delivery service only 4 days late.

I had a heck of a job with getting the engine mounts off and swapped between the ex-selecta and Fizzle, I took the cambelt cover off and still struggled for space due to my massive mitts.

Anyway, I've a day to get everything back on before it's belt time...

John, the beauty of Fire engine is that will run rough or will not start if the timing will be off.
Remember me just of M42 J3?
