Hi, I've recently bought a crash damaged 2005 panda multijet from a salvage auction, Its currently in at a local body shop having new wings and bonnet fitted, I've found that the speedo is not working, I've checked the speedo fuse under the bonnet, that is OK, I'm wondering if the sensor is damaged or loose, has anyone any idea where it is ?
It looks awfully crapped under the bonnet, A diagram would be much appriciated if anyone has one.
cheers

Usually speedo sensors are connected to the top of the gearbox.

It makes sense that the problem could be tied in with the ABS - I had a minor shunt in a Rover 75 a few years ago (minor front end damage to Rover, wrote off a Mk II Punto!), when I got the car back from the bodyshop the speedo failed a day later and the ABS warning light came on. Looking under the bonnet, a connector coming from the NSF wheel arch wasn't properly connected. Everything was OK once this was refitted.

thanks for the info guys. I got the car back from the body shop yesterday, and Theyve gone a great job, it is classed as a right off though, does that mean I have to have it MOT'd ?
It drives fine but still no speedo.
T14086 can you please tell me where to find the brake node ?

I'm hoping to let me daughter run this car, but I cant give it to her until I get the speedo working, I dont think the main dealers will touch it, with it being accident damaged.

......... cheers

Has the car got ABS fitted? Speed signals come from wheel sensors to the ABS unit then to the relevent sources that require the signal(ecu, radio etc)a quick way of seeing if the speed signal is coming from the abs is to put radio on & drives gradually faster,if your radio is fitted with auto volume it will increase the faster you go to overcome wind/road noise.

thanks t1406, I went out and checked the abs fuse (7.5amp) guess what it was blown, replaced it, and presto speedo now works fine. The abs light is still on though ?
Guy at salvage yard told me that was normal after front end bump, and I would need to get dealer to reset, strange thing, airbags are intact, must have been a low speed bump. brakes feel fine on car and speedo works, do I need dealer to reset abs light ?
......... cheers

I am now delighted with this car, just over 12 months old, cost me £2200 at salvage yard, plus £850 at body shop, I cant understand why it was written off though ?
I think its an ex airport hire car.
My wife has just bought a brand new panda at £6000.
T1406, do I take that I'm on my own with it, and the warranty is void due to insurance write off ?

Good stuff...ABS light 'should' go out after a short drive. If not there could be a underlying fault.

As far as the warranty issue is concerned i'm not absolutely sure,I would assume if a claim for a non-damaged part was claimed for it would be ok but I would suggest verifying this, obvioulsly service record must be up to date/in order.

I'd say the warranty is totally useless.

The car's been written off by insurers.

You do need it inspected before it's possible to drive it on the road.

One of my Mini's was written off, rebuilt, then examined and tested before I could use it on the public highway.

Insurance companies write off cars because in their opinion it's not economically viable to have the car repaired.

Typical example is classic cars. A small knock and most insurers will write the car off, which is why people with classic cars always go for insurance companies that specialise in either their particular marque or a classic car policy, and have agreed value on the vehicle.

Not too sure about modern cars though.

Insurers go on the basis that garages don't know how to repair an older type petrol engine or bodywork that you can't get panels for or are specialist items.

Which is true in part. When one of my Mini's was written off, it only needed a new bonnet and two new front wings, new front panel, grill and starter motor and distributor. The whole repair including a respray only cost about £600, but the Insurers wouldn't pay it, they wrote it off as repairable salvage so I could buy it back and do it myself.

Stupid insurance companies!!!! :bang:

I would check with the RAC or AA about testing your Panda now it's repaired as you dont want to get into trouble driving it or when you go to tax it, if they find out it's a write off. Would have been wiser to check that out before buying it and paying for the repairs, just incase they say you can't retax it.
