General Panda 750 Progress

General Panda 750 Progress

That was an interesting night. :bang:

The timing belt went on but I set the timing one tooth out. Sorted that and the car dropped to two cylinders. Lots of head scratching later I traced the problem to the distributor cap. The spark was jumping all over the place. Luckily I had a spare for a 999cc, they appear to be the same and it's now running. The ignition timing is a mile out so a dwell meter is my next purchase.

Not yet. It's sitting in the garden at the minute. It's off up to Stuarts next Sunday all being well. Jim is helping me with a trailer. The plan is to strip it down, get the welding done, and then take it back to bare metal for a respray.

I do have an old set of wheels on it at the minute though. The set that cam with it have had the tyres removed and I'm currently looking for someone to sandblast and powdercoat them.

No more money has been spent on it yet, but that looks set to change dramatically over the next few weeks... :(

The 'rescue' mission swung into full flow today with the Panda being trailered to uncle Stuarts house. :p

Unfortunately the poor Panda has to suffer the ultimate indignity, being towed by Jim's Renault. :(

Here's Jim in his Action Man pose through the sunroof at the bottom of my street.

The Black Hole of Lurgan dead ahead...

Is that rust? Stuart took a screwdriver to the car and started poking. I think he wants me to scrap it and buy a better Panda. It's worse than I realised.

I don't want to scrap her. Stuart is being very generous in helping. I'm not in a position to do the work myself, so if he feels it's beyond repair then I'll go along with that. If it is I'll find another Panda, well I'll probably find 4 before I get one I'm happy with. :)

For a respray and the work done to a standard which would return the car to mint condition we're looking at hundreds of pounds... Hard to justify. On the other hand, if I could get it mot'ed and back on the road as it is for a couple of hundred I'd be happy.

Mine cost £260 with an MOT (yes, I know I was lucky), but it doesn't stop there with Tax and Insurance on top - nearly £400 all in.

Mind you, I still think I might need a new thermostat but a 'running' project is easier than a non-running one. I'm hoping running the car will sort it (have not yet got the car warm enough to kick in the fan).

When you look how much they are going for an e-bay, I think you can get a great roadworthy example for £200-£300 - why are they not more sought after? So much character, such a rewarding drive. Still whilst it's a secret it keeps the prices down - but I honestly believe we are running (future) classics. I just love 'em!
