Cheers for the replies :)

Two sets are out sadly

Given they aren't too dear (and I'm not paying for them [it's a works car]) I was thinking of 'Premium' tyres such as Michelin Alpin 3s (c.£70 each) or similar, so I was hoping summer useage wouldn't be too awful...

Well, Continental recommends that if you have to have 1 set of tyres that they be winter tyres. After all you're not going to get stuck when it's too warm are you? Any sensible and sensitive driver can drive according to the grip of winter tyres :)

Some prices (14 Sept 2012)

Vredestein Quatrac 3 = £57 / corner (all in - fitted, balanced, old diesposed of etc)

Hankook Optimo 4S = £54 / corner

Vredestein Snowtrac 3 = £70 / corner

Will probably go for the latter as a bit more agressive / suitable for the off roading I do at work. The first two are both very good but a bit too road-biased for me at the moment.

Will let you all know how things progress...

What size does the Panda take in 4x4 size?

As you know, I was a fan of the Vredesteins, but two things made me move away from them: first, Supertyres in Welwyn (where I got them from ) closed and I couldn't find another local supplier, and secondly, with my high annual mileage (over 15k a year) they were wearing out too fast, only giving 20k or so on the fronts.

Recently fitted four Kleber Quadtraxers instead - again an 'all season' tyre. Nice looking tyres (not that that really matters), and since Kleber are part of Michelin, are not an 'unknown' brand. Fitted 5,000 miles ago, but the rears still have the 'whiskers' showing around the edge, so wearing much more slowly. Quieter than the Vreds, and seem to have improved my MPG as well. Firmer sidewalls which means cornering is better, and grip in the rain is very good. Off road on muddy tracks they have coped really well. Too early to know about snow/winter grip, but they are proper M+S tyres, marked with the 'mountain and snowflake' symbol that shows they are approved for alpine winter use, so they should be OK with British snow.

Can't find receipt right now but seem to recall about £60 each, fitted.

[later: £42.70 each, plus VAT, plus valve, balance, disposal and a tyre warranty at £5 per tyre) -- total £277 inc vat., so nearer £70 each all in]

AS an aside, since I have a spare set of steel wheels for the car, looking at fitting Bridgestone Dueller D693 A/T to these -- not a winter tyre, but an 'all terrain' tyre, better for offroad use. National Tyre Services list these in the UK now -- not previously seen them available in the UK in Panda size (the 165/70 14 size): http://www.national.co.uk/tyres-siz...ating=T&LoadIndex=81&Pattern=Bridgestone+D693

resurecting the thread .....what is best for our under powered climbing ? 185/65/14 175/70/14 165/75/14 ?
in trips i feel the car struglles to speeds over 120 km/h in uphills or else for 140 km/h is 5000+rpm

Not the correct car for regular over 90mph.

Something like a VW Polo 1.6 GT TDI is 2300rpm @ 120kmph

I doubt tyres will make a noticeable difference

i will trye a more free exhaust back box or even free flow header and maby go the cam for reprofile if the tuner told me that i will no lose any low ....i also have instal a afr regulator that works and i will thoght if i keep it or if i go for ecu reprogram if tuner ensure me that i take over 3 hp ....also i want to trye a rear spoiler and that is all about small gains cheep that i hope give a small breath
