OT - Wireless Networking Question

Hi guys,

I'm trying to set up wireless internet access in my house but my router isn't all that good. The router is downstairs and I lose connectivity upstairs!! A friend has given me his old router because he has just bought a new one and I was wondering if its possible to use them both together.
Would I need to set seperate IP addresses for each router (they are out of each others range so will not detect each other) or is there a way to set up FHSS (frequency hopping) on them?? They are both Netgear DG834G routers.I realise that I can buy an access point that just literally boosts the signal from your router, but I figure that if I can use this free router I might as well!!
Also, the second router will be plugged into a telephone extention lead which has a microfilter at the front of it. Would I need another at the end?

Just buy a wireless access point, this will solve the bad connectivity issues. Just place it midway between the router and you. Also it could be the router thats pants and causing bad wireless strengths.

Yeah you can setup two routers together. Wouldn't bother doing this route though.

Just had a thought.
Presumably, I could set the gateway on the second router to 'point' at the first router, so all internet traffic is actually going through one router.
So.... by doing this, I could set different access permissions on each router??

I'm fairly new to wireless so could someone confirm something for me please? If I bought the above access point, would I have to run an ethernet cable between the router and the access point, or would it pick up the wireless signal and 're-broadcast' it??

if its only upstairs and downstairs and its on en extension as it is is there no where you could put it to service both?

you'd have to set one up to look at the other i would think as they couldnt both try and connect to the broadband?

@ Allan - Yes it will go halfway in between, but each computer only gets a poor - average signal. With the amount of downloading we all do, we need at least a good signal!! (we have 4 PC's and a laptop)

I set the second one up do that its gateway was pointing at the first one but this didn't work. I think this was because it was trying to receive signal on the ADSL port rather than on the wireless, and I cant find a setting to change this??

I tried to plug both routers into the phone line but the second one cant detect a signal at all!! Didn't think it would though!!

Just whack the old router upstairs mate, this gives you the best coverage...you should have no problems with reception up or downsatirs once you do this. If however there is no telephone socket upstairs then you can either get an extention telephone lead or go down the more expensive and tidy route of buying the access point. Hope that helps.
