When I get my Licence back with the point on do I have to tell the insurance company straight away?

You dont have to, only at renewal time. However, I usually forget by that time and hence got caught out after an accident when I wrote it on the form. The inusrance company simply back tracked the charge they would have billed me for had they knew about the points to start with.
