Right then,

I have got a new laptop that I have had now for about 1 month. HP Pavillion dv9030ea.

It is currently running Windows XP Media edition.

I can however pay for p&p (about £12 according to them) to upgrade Xp to Vista.

Is it worth upgrading??

Any help would be great as I don't want to waist my money on something that once installed, I'm gona remove again because its crap.

Thanks in advance

You should be ok, but I won't be going over for at least a year until all my peripherals have decent drivers and the bugs are all ironed out.

If something isn't broken - don't attempt to fi it. I wouldn't bother personally - I have it, tried it and didn't like it.

Remember the horros of Windows ME?

I'd wait but check when the last time you can apply for the upgrade is, after all you dont have to install it straight away and there may be a limited time to apply for the 'free' upgrade, dont get me wrong i think its something like 6 months, just dont leave it to the very last min.

I have been reading quite a lot of reviews on it. I know most of the testing was done on Beta version but some were done on the final version before the release and their comments on it were quite positive.

If the worst come to it, I can always put Xp media edition back on I supose.

I have been testing vista for the last 9 months for microsoft and i must admit even now vista is not as stable as xp in 32bit format. the place you will see a great improvement is if you opt for the 64bit version as this is where microsoft have put 80% of their effort.

if you are running anything less than a 3ghz with 2gb of ram and sata2 hdd's and 256mb graphics stay away because it is a hardware W-h-o-r-e

Not sure what my HDD are but the rest of my computer is as follows:

AMD Turion64 x2
2Gb Ram
256Mb Nvidia Graphics Card

The link to my Laptop is as follows:

Why on earth are the specifications so high?! Surely there can't be anything that amazing to warrant such a hardware requirement?

My HP laptop (ML-32 1.8 Turion 64, 7200rpm IBM 60Gb, 1Gb, onboard 128mb gfx) sounds like it will come to a grinding halt :(

microsoft writes bloatware. simple as that.
I'll be buying Vista, but not until its been out a while, and the first crop of bugfixes are out.
That, and the fact i will be buying a dual core 64 bit cpu probably near to Christmas, but maybe after. so thinking about it, probably waiting till then.

I got this just after christmas

http://www.comet.co.uk/cometbrowse/product.do?sku=362182

And get the same deal on Vista, i.e. just paying for postage.

Ive been running vista for a while but only through vmware, there are a few handy features and nice touches, such as the task manager now gives some more useful info.

I will take up the offer soon, a tenner isnt really much, but I wont install it untill atleast when SP1 comes out, which from most accounts wont be to far away!

It has its pro`s and cons like anything else ,i thought about upgrading too.
Now i have decided to wait a year or so just until every little bug/ problems sorted etc!!
I did this when moving fron Me -Xp and researched all about it, then swapped , it served me fine, good luck whatever you decide.

OMG, ME was bloody awful. i bought it, think it lasted about a week, then i took it off....
At least when i instaled Xp i LIKED it, lol. Hope i'll like Vista. i've lost my original XP disk and manuals and everything. so re-installing is troublesome. But i'm still not putting Vista on till i get my cpu and memory upgrade (2x512 PC2700 just now) and the first SP is out.

I heard something about the Vista upgrade needing the machine to have XP/2000 on it rather than just a valid previous licence key from XP/2000.

So if you want to do a clean install of vista after a fatal error you first have to do a complete install of XP then install Vista on top.

This is why Im going to wait till a few service packs have come out.

ME......oh my what a disaster.

I used to have to re-format and re-install on a weekly basis.....I kid you not.

Got fed up with it and almost gave up on the idea of having a computer.

When i switched to xp I didn't have any problems.....(until I screwed something up and had to re-format re-install)

I shall also be waiting for a while before I upgrade to Vista.

I'm not sure that an operating system that requires more resources to run is neccesarily a step forward.

How long do you actually spend using windows anyway. Most of the time I'm on the pc I'm playing games anyway so can't even see windows :)

I had ME at first and it was absolute garbage. Of it cam and on went Windows 2000 which i stuck with until 2 years or so ago when I changed to XP Pro.

I had Vista for as long as the new IE.

£1 to a pich of ****e it takes Microsoft forever to get it right.

Was anyone camped outside PC world waiting to get a copy this morning? :-D

no. and last i heard, no-ones been in for it yet.
BTW, if VISTA doesn't come out as a standalone installation i for one wont be amused. half my reason for getting it is i've lost all my original stuff. dont ask how, because if i can manage to keep my duke nukem (the platform game level 1) floppy disk for all these years, you'd think i'd manage to hold onto an XP cd and manual for 4 :(
