Hi all. Not been on for a little while as I had my eyes lasered last week and VDU (good grief, how old is THAT?!) vision is not too great at the moment.
Everything has gone great and my vision is already up to driving standard and expected to be 20/20 or better in the next couple of weeks as the healing continues and the inflammation subsides. All in all I would recommend it to anyone thinking about having it done and expect to feel more and more that way as the weeks pass.
No more specs! WOO-HOOOOOOO!!! :)

Nice one Al

Hope ya up and running soon. Everyone I know who has had the laser treatment has said it has worked wonders.

Which treatment did you have done? Lasik, lasek, etc?
The missus is thinking of getting it done but cant decide which to go for

Cheers,

Thanks Wim. Bit better again today so hopeful of a really good result.
Martin - the treatment you have (Lasik or Lasek) is more down to the thickness of your cornea. Best way to describe it is if you think of your corneas as being made up of sheets of A4 paper stacked on top of each other. The thickness of the cornea can vary significantly and the individuals cornea thickness dicatates which treatments you can have.
Lasik involves taking off the top 10 sheets of paper, operating on the 10 sheets below that and then replacing the top ten sheets. This procedure has the quicker recovery period but has a lower sucess rate in terms of how much your eyes improve. Many people opt for Lasik as they can achieve driving standard very quickly (usually 24hrs).
Lasek involves just taking off the very top sheet of paper (the epithelium), operating on the 10 sheets below and then replacing the top layer and applying a contact lens "bandage" that you must wear 24/7 for 7 days to assist healing of the epithelium. Lasik has a slower recovery period with vision steadily improving over a period of 4-6 weeks, achieving driving standard after 7 days. It also has a higher success rate and is the procedure that all the staff that I spoke to had opted for when they had their eyes treated - 75% of all staff I spoke to had already had laser vision correction.
As my corneas were relatively thin I had no option but to go for Lasek.

While i hear a lot of people rave about laser eye surgery, it should always be remembered that it can affect your future career choices. Anything military in nature, and careers in aviation etc will be affected. Just thought i'd throw in the flip side. A mate of mine had it done a couple of years back, costing him in the region of £2k iirc and said if he could have done it twice he would have. He used to wear the thickest glasses you ever saw! They were like double glazing! However, while he still owns reading glasses (i think) Ive never seen him wear glasses since!

Yep, worth remembering the career choices, however it also opens up ones that you could never have done before. I know fire fighters must have a decent level of uncorrected vision and many of them have the laser surgery as their sight deteriorates.
On reading glasses, nothing can yet help with late stage long sight as this is controlled by the lens in your eye not the cornea. The lens is elastic and as we get older (usually 40 years old and over) the lens loses some of it's elasticity and as a result you lose your ability to read without reading glasses. There is currently no corrective solution for this although there is study taking place and processes are being developed.
