Whats the difference between a modem and a wireless router??

Basically, I am on Wandoo Broadband and pay an extra £4 for Wireless and Talk. This gives you a wirless modem and an extra telephone socket with a 0845 telephone number.

Thought it was a good buy 'cos you get dicounted calls.

Anyway, the "Livebox" as they call is crap. It keeps cutting off and reconnecting.

So i am going to cancel this service and have on order a wirless router.

Will i need a modem for this router and if yes, will the basic modem that wanadoo supply work?

Cheers guys

I assume Wanadoo is ADSL.

wireless routers can come with a modem integrated (netgear DG384G). That one connects with a cable for the modem. As for all the other things, its got a 4 port 10/100 switch integrated and issues IP address to other devices on your local network. So you can have devices connected with RJ45 cabling, or connecting wireless.

Check the router you bought to see if the modem is part of it. I've just ordered ADSL and i'm getting the netgear router because its got the modem built in, wireless connectivity and wired connections. Its ADSL2+ compatible aswell with firewall and SPI

No. I think it is just a Router. Does not say anything about it having a built-in modem.

Will i need/be able to connect the stadard modem they supply???

I think youll need to connect it otherwise you wont be able to use the Adsl?

Im not sure if youll be able to connect it though, dont know how that part of it works.

What you want, what you really, really want (;)) is a Wireless ADSL router. This will have everything you need built in and all you will need to do is whack it in your ethernet socket and then connect your phone line to it and whatever else you have.

These are usually pretty simple to set up, although you will need all your Wanadoo login details to get going.

Flog your modem elsewhere and get a few bob for it.

I have a Draytek 2600VGi which is more enterprise class than domestic, but they do some cracking kit for home users too.

Check out their models...

The 2600 range is good because they are ADSL routers that also support VoIP (Draytek even have their own VoIP provider, DrayTel, whcih rivals Skype for cheap phone calls), and you might want to check out the 2100VG.

Of course there are many different models out there, but I've been using my Draytek for a couple of years now and it is rock solid, it never drops the line, it's fast and the wireless signal goes for miles ! (well, lots of metre's).

I'm a Wanadoo ADSL user too, so drop me a line if you need help setting it up :)
