im wanting to buy a laptop and i have £800, which one would you lot recommend? best spec pos.

after being on here for the past year or so, i have seen many people talking about computers/laptops, so thought you's could provide some advice. thanks a lot.

i like sony. i think sony and toshiba are the best makes from a quality and robustness point of view but toshiba have annoying keyboards, the start button and delete button are in odd places and so they are very annoying to use.

I have a dell for work which was the cheapest new laptop i could find, it was about £400+vat and is a really good machine, apart from the above mentioned keyboard problem. I have had it drenched by the rain on several occasions and after drying out it works fine again.

I would avoid compaq, my dad had two and the hinges on both broke.

Also look into reconditioned, there are many places that sell them like that at a cut down price.

Go for a make that custom builds it for you. Laptops have very little that you can upgrade so getting it right first time is very important. Get as much as you can afford now, because it is cheaper than upgrading memory and Hard Drives post build.

Dell & Mesh both do custom built stuff. Whatever you do, do not buy from PC World/Dixons as you are buying a PC that was built 6 months ago and will be of a pre-defined spec. Plus, they will rip you off on warranties and you'll be stuffed if it goes wrong as their after sales (if you can call it that) sucks.

From Computer Buyer...

No.1 in Top 50 best buy...

Hi-Grade Notino 3600-2000a £639 (£751 inc vat)
Review Date: Sept '03

We were gobsmacked to see Hi-Grade offering this 2ghz laptop for just £639. OK, it's a little short on graphics power (but you don't buy a laptop to play games) and needs an extra 128mb of RAM, but it's still an astonishing deal.

2ghz Intel Celeron
128mb 266mhz DDR RAM
40gb HDD
8:LOL:VD 24x8x8 CD-R/W drive
32mb SiS 650 Graphics
14.1 in TFT screen (1024x768)
4 USB ports
VGA
S-Video
Weighs 3kg

Do not buy Dell!

Not unless you like headaches and ulcers
great sales team LOUSY LOUSY LOUSY after-sales support

The online tech support form doesn't work
The phones aren't answered
You eventually speak to non-technical, under-paid Indian graduates who do not know about computers "the software you installed is changing the IRQs sir"

Do not buy Dell!

Have to agree...Dell's support has suffered since moving to India.

I'm sorry, but I believe companies doing this are going to come seriously unstuck. How much longer will we put up with speaking to someone who has little knowledge of your issue, speaks in an accent that is barely understandable and has a mediocre grasp of the English language and has no knowledge of the geography of the country from where their customers are calling. These call centres in Delhi and other places might be cheaper, but the service is incredibly poor. Add that to the fact that many people here in the UK have been laid off in favour of these centres (Many here in Norwich, when Norwich Union decided to follow suit) and I truly hope and believe this will come back and bite these companies on the arse.

Still, you can't fault Dell PC's themselves. Very well built (in Dublin) ;)
