I'm trying to fix Windows XP on a mates laptop (Toshiba Satellite 4080XCDT) but seem to be having a problem in that the keyboard is totally non-responsive!

If I plug in an USB or PS2 keyboard, they work fine but onboard keyboard is dead. The nipple on the keyboard however seems to work fine.

Doesn't appear to be any signs of stress/damage. I've taken the keyboard out but to no avail.

Any ideas folks?! Ta muchly :)

if your reinstalling windows you'll wipe the drivers installed on the cpu, including sound, video and networking to say the least, hope this helps

Apparently keyboard was working one minute and dead the next.

I've noticed that none of the on board numlock/scroll/caps lights are illuminated - they are on external keyboard.

BIOS options are really limited and don't give you option to disable keyboard or anything remotely close :(

could it be a simpler problem such as the ribbon cable from the keyboard pulled out of the motherboard connector ?

Owen.

re

as above, or its probably screwed i'd say.

the 'nipple' is probably a different cable?

I had a satellite once and the same thing happened to me. took out the keyboard and pushed in the ribbon. the light flashed on and then went off again. I got a new ribbon from a computer fair for a couple of pounds. It was ok after i replaced it

Had the same problem with my old Toshiba couple of years back.. replaced the keyboard only £15 of ebay... sorted
