*OT* Engine rebuild cost?

I've tried migweb but its impossible to get a straight answer from those bunch of muppets lol.

Most of you know Leanne (my better half).

Her poor little corsa is struggling lately, burning a lot of oil (you can tell as its all up the back of the car and the level drops quite quickly). I'm pretty sure its the piston rings that have broken down. this was due to borewash that was caused by a failed coilpack and persistant attempts to start (20 mins) and then with a new coilpack it started and ended up kicking out loads of blue smoke and now running like a bag-o-sh*te since.

My question is, how much is a piston ring change likely to cost? I ask this as I'm weighing up the cost of fitting a like for like engine with help from one of my dub mates against having the engine fixed up.

I advised her to buy a sei/cinq but shes dead set on keeping her lil beastie (the car is mint other than the engine which Jay and Lee can back up) so no sarky comments please!

please help!

Cheers,

Dan

the repair/rebuild will be a better option. imo. no evidence of prices to back that up though. :)

There is no easy answer. If its a dry liner engine and the bore is damaged then unless you can get oversized pistons its basically scrap metal.

It may be possible to sleeve the bore but thats ££.

Even if the bore is fine there may be a step at the top of the bore (depending on how old it is) and that will cause problems with new rings.

A second hand engine would be the easiest and cheapest option.

If its a wet liner engine then you can just get a new set of std size pistons and liners and away you go.

its a 97 (P) 1.2 8 valve with coilpack ignition instead of the earlier dizzy cap kind if that makes any difference?

You might get lucky at the scrappys. Phone round and ask if any Corsas are coming in or about to, as it would be preferable to hear the engine before you spend your time fitting it to your car.

I know that my local scrappy in Bury has been swamped by cars due to the new car tax laws!

if you have bore wash piston rings aint gonna fix it!

you will need a rebore and over sized pistons oversixed rings different head gasket new head bolts etc etc.... at the end of the day it will cost more than a replacement engine.

my advice is hunt down another engine same model and year and do a swop.

a corsa engine swop is a 4hour job max if you need a haynes i can lend you one. heck if you do it one weekend il pop over and give you a hand. you dont even need a hoist you can use two straps and just lift the engine in.

Theres plenty of engines kicking about, just dizzy cap ignition ones instead of coilpack ones (the dizzy capped ones are the old nova engines) and to revert it back to dizzy cap I'd need the ecu from that car instead of just the engine and gearbox from a like for like one.

grrr. its frustrating. cheers for offer ash.
