Right, I'm running the standard BT broadband router (BT Voyager 205 ADSL Router). My computer connects to the router through USB and my mothers computer connects through Ethernet. Now weve never had a problem with this set up but yesterday there was a power surge which unfortunately blew the power supply on my mothers computer.

She then went and fetched a new computer and set it up. Now the problem is it wont accept theres a router connected to it. If you unplug the ethernet cable it tells you that it has done so, so it obviously knows that it is connected to a router. The shop are being most unhelpful by saying that it isnt possible to connect 2 computers by USB and Ethernet to that router. It clearly is because thats how it came out the factory and I'm on the verge of inserting said router about his person.

I've tried every option to get this working but no luck. If you go into network connections theres a LAN connected with the correct IP and subnet etc for BT Broadband but its not connecting to the internet.

Help!!

Its a shot in the dark but...
Try checking the Security Panel on the new PC - make sure th Windows Firewall is switched off and that the USB connected machine is allowing the internet connection to be shared.
I assume all the other drivers are installed on the new machine.

I don't have much experience of routers but I was under the impression that you either had to use USB or Ethernet and not both.

However, it mostly sounds like a firewall issue as opined above.

Yes, tried it with the firewall off and with and without the drivers installed.

Its a strange one! She took it back to the shop this morning and apparently its connected straight away as soon as they plugged there connection in.

What OS are you using? XP?

You need to run the network connection wizard the computer connected through ethernet. It is located in Network Connections in the side bar called 'Set up a home or small office network'. You don't need to run it on the other computer.
Firewalls should not be the problem unless you have one installed other than the basic windows firewall and it has been set to ultra high security.

With XP in its default just installed settings it should detect the connection through the ethernet automatically, if above does not work then have a look at the router settings, it might be preventing all MAC addresses except for the ones you tell it to allow.

re

as above only thing i can think to add is to ask if it has an external power supply aswell? if not if probably gets power fro the usb? is your other pc on at the same time?

Errr... I didn't think this was possible either - you either choose ONE or the other. (USB or Ethernet)

Look at it like this; how can your router bind 2 external IP addresses to a Private Network Address when you are only paying for one dynamic IP address?

Answer: you can't.

@Ian
The adsl router he has has 1 usb connection and 1 ethernet connection for connecting 2 pcs (which is an unusual method but thats BT for you).

Also, I have 3 PCs, one xbox and a laptop connected through one ADSL line. They have their own internal IPs, one external IP.

------------
Does the usb connected pc have to be switched on for the internet to work on the ethernet pc?

Are you using the same ethernet cable as you used on the other (old) pc?

Well after lots of head scratching, tried a different ethernet cable and it connected straight away...

Bloody computers!

In the words of Roy from The IT Crowd...

"Have you tried turning it off and on again ??"
