How do I know what type/make etc of oil to put in my fiat punto sport 1.4 petrol & how often?

5W30 Or 5W40 is fine (Summer for the latter is preferred but not essential)

Ensure it is C3 spec. Castrol Magnatec Edge for example, around £30 for 4 litres. You can verify this in your vehicle handbook.

depends on the date of printing the following spec is the revised oil spec iirc it was about 2009 they (fiat) changed their minds probably to standardize oil used across the range and reduce emissions (hence the C3 low ash certification) and look after the twin air engine on the new cars...

SAE 5W-40 ACEA C3 synthetic oil to FIAT 9.55535-S2 certification. (PETROL CARS ONLY)

its on offer at asda at the moment ;)

as for how often..... how is the level on the dipstick? if its on minimum it needs a top up..... beware topping up the engine from empty only holds about 3l so dont go pouring loads in IIRC its about 1/2 a litre from minimum to maximum...

it should be changed along with the oil filter every year or 18,000 miles which ever comes first

if yours is the 1.4 8v its almost the same engine
