Technical Oil recommendation

Last time my Multi (04'JTD) was serviced by Fiat, they used Elf Excellium LDX 0w30 oil (very expensive). They said it's what Fiat recommended (other than the Italian brand oil that I can't quite remember.

Is this Over The Top? Will a lesser oil do?

You do NOT need the highest specification for lubrication and I am surprised that a FIAT dealer would use anything, other than SELENIA products. I drive an Eleganza JTD. In my ELX JTD, I used Selenia WR in winter, but, thanks to the FIAT Motor Club(GB) I discovered Selenia Digitech 0W/30. Expensive but equates with MOBIL 1. Superior lubrication and excellent MPG.
