Thanks RalphNZ, but unfortunately that tapered seal is only for the 903cc engine, not the 999cc FIRE. 
I might have one last go at fixing the oil leak, which will basically consist of taking EVERYTHING off one last time. jjhepburn has already done this a couple of times, though, so I don't know if I'll achieve much.
