Hi,

Am having lots of fresh oil appearing at the front of the engine, just above the water pump housing (the flat surface just below the head gasket at the left front of the engine) From here it drips down onto the oil filter.

However, I have cleaned the Cylinder head, and redone the rocker cover gasket. The head is remaining clean, so I can confirm that it isn't coming from the rocker cover. The oil returns within a mile of driving, so it is occurring quickly.

I have recently redone the head gasket, so was wondering about this (but thought the oil went up the front middle of the engine. (am also hoping that I won't have to repeat that job)

Would be grateful for any thoughts.

I assume you mean the camshaft oil seal at the same end as the sprocket.
If I was to replace this, what would be the best method of removing the sprocket from the camshaft ?.

I'm going to have another look at this in the morning to see if I can work out where the leak is coming from, but I had wondered if it was the camshaft.

i thought it was like the fire engine, line up marks jam camshaft and loosen bolt, remove belt and bolt ,i use a tool used for pulling oil seal out, clean shaft to allow new seal to sit correctly having giving the inside of seal a drop of fresh oil for lube.tap new seal in to correct depth, changing the tb kit and pump is a good idea(y)

Hi Guys,

Thanks for the advice.

I'm going to replace the camshaft oil seal this weekend. The leak did appear to clear up for a few days, but was back to being bad again today. Thankfully I have a new seal from when I did the head gasket (it came in the kit).

I was thinking I would place the cam in a vice with some wood around it to try and get enough purchase to remove the sprocket, or is there a better way to do this.

fingers99 suggests I should remove the sprocket before removing the cam from the engine

dirtyhands suggests that I wouldn't even have to remove the rocker cover (let alone the cam-shaft from the engine).

If I were to go down such a route what is the best way to stop the camshaft from moving, to allow me to remove the sprocket ? (it seems screwed on pretty tight)

Do I assume that it is better (from a seal perspective) to add the seal to the camshaft whilst it is still in situ. As I was planning to remove the camshaft and replace the seal before putting the camshaft back into the engine.

I've never had to replace a seal like this before, so I'm grateful for your advice.

Thanks,

Alastair

you are only making more work for your self in removing the camshaft

i hold a strong screwdriver in the round holes when timing marks aligned to jam sprocket ,i use a 17mm ring spanner holding the ring end with thumb to hold in position and tap heavily with palm of hand anti clockwise to loosen,it will loosen and you can remove belt and bolt ,tighten up with a 1/2 power bar ,no need to swing out of it as you dont want to strip threads ,but not loose enough for it to come off.,done loads in situ without problems.

and how are you going to fit seals say in a gearbox as the casing is in one piece?if outer and inner point of contact is clean ,a good smear of fresh oil on inner and outer makes it glide in easier ,then a tap to correct level.(y)
