Last week one of my glow plugs decided to die. So I ordered a set of 4 genuine fiat glow plugs and today I decided to replace them all. I know their is no need to change them all, but hell if im in there I may as well get them all done as i dont want to be doing it again any time soon.
Let me start, those with JTDs don't bother trying if you've not got the tools for the job as its not a glow plug socket only job. I've never seen such a bad place to put glow plugs. Its a several hour job and chances of damaging the threads on the head are high. This makes changing spark plugs a walk in the park. All i can say for those who attempt it in the future, make sure you use plenty of WD40 the night before, take extreme caution and be very gentle when removing parts and plugs.
It took me several hours, started at 2pm but at 6pm today I had replaced all the glow plugs (I went shopping within this time too). Lots of components had to be removed to gain access to the plugs, the EGR was one of them as i didn't want to loose my socket as i dont have slim, long, bendy fingers. I think Fiat must have a slim extended glow plug extractor as my sockets wouldn't get passed the fuel lines, I had to fit the socket first then get the extension bar down to the socket. Very fiddly.
I know the JTD can start perfectly on 3 working plugs or even 2 but I like having no warning lights appearing. Total cost £47. Job well done, money saved plus I know all plugs are replaced as some garages only replace the faulty one as its such a pain to replace them all.
Fiat wanted £195.50+VAT labour plus £12+VAT (x4)each for plugs. Total cost of £280. Therefore i saved £233. Smaller garages quoted me £60+VAT minimum labour plus £12+VAT plugs(x4). Thats a total of £125 minimum (The garage knew how much of a pain changing the JTD plugs were and said labour charges could go higher if a problem was to occur during removal i.e. striping the threads on the head). In this particular case I saved £78.
I remember when removing plugs from an 03 Alfa 156 2.4 JTD it wasn't this difficult.
Im glad its done and wish those in the future who attempt this the best of luck.
