would one of the motorspares off the shelf ones be ok to use in my w/ender as my orig one has packed in no power getting to it and yes i've checked the fuses so i thought i'd run a new live straight from the batt earth it out on the batt as well oh i dunno its doing my head in charging the htc/iphones up on road etc any info help out there for me would be great..andy....

Easy to do, but as Hellcat says you must put a fuse close to the battery. Also make sure the wire is thick enough and goes through a grommet when you route it into the car. Then it is just a case of finding a socket that fits in the same hole or can be mounted somewhere else.
A few years ago, on my manual Brava, I got so fed up with knocking the charging plug for my phone when I changed gear that I put a socket on the passenger side of the dash board level with the heater controls. I had one with a black plastic cap that said 12V on it (as fitted in the load compartment on SAAB estates) so it looked ok when not in use. Putting a socket there makes it quite easy too as you can remove the glove comparment liner and get full access behind the panel. It also means you don't have to have the ashtray open when you are charging stuff.
Many cars these days have that type of 12V power socket in the boot, especially estate cars, so you may be able to get a socket from a main dealer. It will cost a bit more but the quality will be significantly better than an accessory item.
Good luck:)

If you do choose to run direct from the battery, remember to put a fuse in line not far from the connection to the power.

I'd be tempted to work out if you have power at the fuse board, and do a bit of cable tracing.

thanks for the reply oh this little simple issue is doing my head in hence me going down the off the shelf route no one here where i live can/will tell me where my prob lies! if only there was a fiat owner nearby even the dealer just says it's this this or could be that etc well i need to know cos i cannot afford to take it and leave it to fix garage god knows what they'll say moving it elswhere in the car sounds cool tho..

As I said, the best part about fitting the socket where I did (to the left of the heater controls in the corner just under where the top dash meets the centre panel) was that I didn't need the ashtray open all the time and didn't keep knocking the charger plug out when I went into first or third gear. It is perfectly safe to run the feed directly from the battery providing you do it neatly and put a fuse very close to the +12v connection. :)
