I have tried several of these types but they do not read the just come up with reading error

will try the multiscan see if it works

If you want a sensible readout with codes and ability to monitor live date and test numerous functions like cooling fans, instrumentation etc then you need the Multieuscan software and leads.
I got mine from www.gendan.co,uk and the blokes there are very helpful and will help you with exactly what you need and give excellent after sales support.
Not the cheapest kit (less than £100) but will tell you what's wrong and someone on this forum should be able to point you in the right direction for a solution.
Good luck!

Just bought the "Fiat, Alfa Romeo, Lancia Complete Diagnostic kit for Garage and Enthusiast" from scantool-direct.co.uk @ £129 delivered.
Includes registration for Multiecuscan.

It came with a collection of OBD connectors which as far as I have read (and they say) will cover all the possible vehicles.

Connected to my 2008 X250 2.3MJ last night and bingo - really happy. Could see considerable detail and also that the garage I bought it from had not updated the oil service interval date or mileage - but when I change it again I will :). Took a moment to figure out which connector to use and the settings.

Had not realised before that you can test almost every circuit on the engine or body ECU's - such as flashing high beam, operating the glow plugs, reading the throttle pot - the works.

Highly recommend it.

You're better off buying th cables on ebay and buying a licence.

That package is about £50 worth.

You could have a dealer level diagbox clone for less than £129.

If you do want to go down a multiecu scan package route then the gendan one is cheaper and better: https://www.gendan.co.uk/product_FESPKG.html

Mini ELM327 is a very cheap bluetooth device (EUR 18 on Ebay). Once installed in the diag socket you can read the ECU errors, erase them and get live information about the engine performance on a smartphone or tablet computer. OBD Car doctor pro is an excellent Android app, so is Torque Pro. Both are almost for free, the completely free versions have limitations.
