I'm posting this while i have the chance
Some of you may remember i was having trouble with my HDD well i'm still having trouble with it.. lol
But this time if i don't do something soon i won't be back online for a bit :(
My drive has gone from 80g to 2g usable the other 78 it's best not to ask.
Anyway the other problem i'm having is when i log onto the net and type an address into the comp it sometimes but not always freezes on me with a row of green lines accross the top of the screen. :(
I have to shuteverything down and start again, it doesn't happen with all addresses just now and then but it's getting more frequent in the last day or so.
Anyone any ideas?
HDD or Chip or even the Board???
Would the time old tradition of slipping a hammer through the board be the right course of action ?

Well, seeing as you already know that the HDD is fecked, I'd change that straight away. How on earth you are still using an 80GB drive that only has 2GB usable is anyone's guess !! LOL

Get a new HDD, do a complete fresh re-install and see how things go. If you are still experiencing these new problems, then it's time to isolate another component.

But for now, get that HDD changed !! :)

What's the spec of the rest of the system BTW ?

Hi Roberto i was hoping you would pick up on this posting.
The spec on this machine is getting a little old now as it's only got an Athlon 1800+ pchip and 512 ddr ram
The 80g was split in two as i had '98 on the first 2 (used it for an old scanner) and NT on the rest .
Got a call on Friday from Tricia to say it had just gone blank and she couldn't use it????????
Tried everything to breath life back into it and finally managed to get back online by installing an old copy of ME on the 2gb
so obviously the other 78 are blind to ME.
Not sure if the other 78 are buggered but theres a fair chance of it and i'm not sure this other 2 g are going to keep going for long .
Had another drive in it as i was repairing one on Saturday in between getting this up and working again and it was running everything just fine but that could have just been a fluke.
So i need a new drive but i was just wondering if the signs i've noticed were a common sign of the chip going south.

To be honest, it could be anything, but I'd get that HD sorted first. Either way, you will need a new one, so fix that and see what happens. Usually if a chip goes (rare), everything goes, it could be a graphics card issue, but if the whole system locks up, it's more likely not to be that. If you're running ME on 2GB, there's bugger all space for anything else and your PC will be using the HD for swap files etc, so 2GB is nowhere near enough.

Change the HD and see what happens. The rest of your spec is a tad out of date, but nothing to worry about. I was running a Pentium III 800MHz on 512MB of RAM until Xmas and had no problems there, except it was slow !

I have noticed it's a tad slow lately so probably does need updating so new HDD first then see what happens
Mabe when i've saved a few pennies i'll change the whole system. :)
Thanks Roberto you've given me something to think about.
Cheers.

You're welcome mate.

If you decide to change the whole system, I'd thoroughly recommend the AMD64 chips, preferably the Socket 939 chips, although the older Socket 754's are still very good and cheaper.

The speeds go up to AMD4000+ which is superb, and the FX variants are even better. Lots of scope for overclocking if that's your thing too.

Add the fact that they are ready for the upcoming 64 Bit Windows, you can't go wrong.

Anyway, good luck with your new HD and let us know how you get on.
