Hi,

I have very little (probably close to none) mechanical knowledge, however, I am not incapable of doing a bit of DIY, can use a screwdriver and I don't mind having a go at most things. With this in mind, I decided that I would like to have a go at servicing my multi, changing the oil and all filters - nothing too adventurous.
I wondered whether anyone has any advice on how I should go about things, any specialist tools I might need and whether this is something that I can do on the driveway at home without any major drama.
If anyone has any diagrams or photos of the process they would be very gratefully received.

Thanks in advance!

yes,
a basic oil and filter service should be within your capabilities,

what engine is your vehicle?,
maybe look in the GUIDES section ( top of homepage) for ideas,

tools = maybe a 12mm allen key - sump plug,
and an oil filter wrench - saves mashing it in case the "NEW" one is the wrong fit and can't be used..!! = been there,

Charlie

Sump plugs can be 8mm, Oil filter has reasonable access so you shouldn't have to resort to putting a screwdriver through it, however use one of the car sites where you can put your registration in to minimise the chances of getting incorrect parts.

Fuel filter is very close to the O/S suspension tower, there is a drain off valve at the bottom of this for bleeding off water in the fuel.

Don't forget the pollen filter under the flap on the n/s scuttle, make SURE you fit this correctly as if not fitted correctly, can create a leak into the passenger footwell.

re: widemouth frog,
Not bought any of the parts yet. Seen them on "carparts4less" at reasonable price with free delivery. Any ideas on anywhere better/cheaper?

You'd be right to shop around. Check the prices offered by Shop4parts. They're not always the cheapest, BUT I recommend the Tutela Jarama oil which is very competitively priced (and I'm told it's the oil used by Fiat dealers). They also sell the sump plug and washer for the JTD at a good price. It's worth checking out the condition of your existing sump plug - typically they're not in the best of health on older Multiplas and some places are charging around £10 for them which is a rip off.

If you're in doubt about the correct oil, fuel, air and pollen filters, it's worth contacting them with your registration number or VIN and they'll point you in the right direction.

Before you ask, I've got no connection with S4P - just a satisfied customer!
