Having a few problems with my 1.2, 2001 Punto.
It seems to rev when the clutch is in with the lower gears (1 & 2).
My dad's suggested after listening to it today that perhaps the clutch is on its way out or the throttle cable.
Not too sure but it seems to be revving high also.

Anyone have any ideas.
A family friend is a mechanic so I might be able to get it done pretty cheaply but does anyone have any ideas on what it could be? Or has anyone else had this problem?

My Mk1 revs high a lot.

It means the car is basically driving itself, which depending on where I am can be bloody dangerous. Its not only in 1st and 2nd though.

My mum seems to thinks it my clutch too.

Someone mentioned a wee bit back about a dirty throttle body/lambda sensor, but I have no idea where these are or how to check:eek:

I'd say it was your clutch. Its slipping due to either the clutch material wearing out (similar to a brake pad), the pressure plate wearing out, or oil dripping onto the clutch. I've got a selecta and found that i had a slipping (electric) clutch due to an oil leak above the gearbox. Traced it to the holder of the HT coils (where the spark plug leads start). Theres an o ring seal to the cylinder head that was leaking oil down onto the clutch. maybe see if the cam cover gasket is not leaking too. You have to fix the cause of the slipping clutch, cos just putting a new one in may not be the final solution!

If the revs rise but the cars speed dosent when in gear with the clutch fully released your clutch is slipping.

If the revs rise when you moving and you have released the accelerator fully and pressed the clutch fully in, (to change gear etc.. ) its possibly dirty throttle body/throttle position sensor

I have the second one. How do I check that?

I've just spoke with my neighbour who is a trained mechanic.
Thank you all for your advise.
Turns out it was a blocked air filter, ordered a new one going to pick it up tomorrow :D
