Technical Not Starting

After a whole load of faffing with the switch and contacts I should really have tried the obvious first. Hitting the starter motor with a hammer...

I had that on my Dolomite, it was intermittent and I got used to just hopping out and whacking it with a pry bar to free it off. Of course, it then failed completely at absolutely the worst possible moment that it could have done so as obvious as it sounds, fix it properly while you can! :)

Yes I got half way through taking it off then decided I couldn't be arsed!...

I actually have a spare stater motor lying around. Am I worth taking apart the old one to clean it up? How serviceable are they?

I also wonder if the fact that I have to hold it on the starter motor for ages (when its been left for a while to lift fuel from the tank) has had something to do with it sticking. Not starting after a couple of cranks when left for a week is definitely my biggest niggle.
