Hey all,

I have a minor issue with my 1.1 Panda from 2002.

When cold starting after sitting for a day or more it takes 2/3 cranks for it to start. After driving it for a bit, thus warm starting the car it starts right away no problem.

Im not too worried about it but it does make for some awkward moments sometimes!

The battery as far as I know is good. The starter motor turns and it could keep cranking if I wanted to. Usually I'll stop cranking after 4 seconds or so. I'll let it sit for a bit before trying again.

Turning the key (not starting) and letting it sit for a minute seems to help most of the times.

Hoping to hear some suggestions. The engine runs and idles fine. Driving has no issues at all either.

Thanks!!

I have a theory that the cars dont start as well as the engine sensors take a second or two to get the cold temperature registered in the ECU. Once it has this away it goes. Do you give the pedal one pump before starting, it may help whe cold.

It may be worth checking with diagnostic machine what the coolant temperature sensor is reading when cold, as it gives it more fuel for cold starting.

I'll give the pedal one pump a try! Fortunately the car will start eventually.

I assume its the obd1 port correct? I only have obd2 hardware so I'll have to source one stuff to read the obd port. I'll give that a try and report back.

Thanks!

Yup, found this. Is this supported by the obd2 protocol? I always thought obd1 and 2 have the same physical interface. Wasn't able to research much information about it.

If so, I'll plug in my scanner tomorrow and see.

That is the behavior of discharged battery.
Start with checking the battery. How old is it? You can read the voltage first thing in the morning, before starting or trying to start the engine. The voltage gives you an idea about how good/charged the battery is. To know for sure, you need to measure it with one of those dedicated tools that tells you how much stored current it holds and what its internal resistance is. Then you'll know if it needs recharging or replacing.
