I was just looking for abit of advise before I take it to a garage so I'm seem like i have abit of knowledge. as I put my grande punto into reverse is making a horrible screeching noise however it doesn't make the noise going into any other gears only when putting it into reverse and doesn't do it all the time either which I thought was strange. I just wondered if anyone knew what it could be or how much i would be looking at vaguely to get it repaired. Thank you in advance

It it a screeching or more of a crunch? Also, which engine have you got?

The 5speed gearboxes on the t-jet crunch as they have no synchromesh on reverse. The trick is to go into first gear once stationary, and then into reverse.

Yeah it's a 5 speed gearbox. It is more like a crunch/ grinding sound tbf however it doesn't do I all the time had the car just over a year and it's only just started doing it. Is there anything I can do to get it sorted and what sort of price am I looking at. Thanks for the help as well

If it's a crunching of gears, and only reverse, then unfortunately this is generally normal for reverse gear.
As Jamie says, reverse gear has no syncromesh.

With the car in neutral and your foot off the clutch, the main shaft inside the gearbox is still rotating even though the car isn't.

When you depress the clutch, drive to the main shaft is all but removed, however a small amount of drive may still be going on with friction through the spigot bearing.

So in effect, your'e trying to engage a static gear with one which is moving.
Hence the crunch or worse if the revs are quite high.

A few things you could try to alleviate the noise.

1. Try putting it in to 1st gear before reverse.
1st gear has syncro, so won't crunch, and by putting it in to 1st, you potentially stop the gears rotating (provided you leave your foot on the clutch of course)

2. Ensure the engine is at tickover, don't try and engage reverse with anything higher.

3. If engaging reverse after coming to a stop, allow it to stop.

4. Ensure the clutch is fully depressed, and wait a few seconds.

Hi, I have the same thing in my Alfa. Before you go to reverce put it first to 4th gear. This will make your reverce to engage as butter...
