Noise advise?

Ive got Y Reg 2001 Fiat Brava 1.2 SX 80.

When moving off I get a noise coming from around the engine area.

The only way I could describe it is it sounds like metal scraping!?!

Shifting from, 1st 2nd & 3rd I get the noise however when I get to 4th & 5th it cancels itself out.
Ive put the car in 4th gear and started to move off from stationary and I dont get the noise (alhough im not gonna move quickly anyway from 4th)

What would you suggest?

Sounds like gearbox related - change the oil in the gearbox and look for metal scrapings.

+ check around the gearbox if something is near the gearbox cables - might be some metal part that you pull every time you shift.

Someone has said to me bearings in the gearbox!?!
I have no clue!
