Hello all

I hope somebody can help me please.

I am driving a 56 plate Grande Punto Sporting 1.4

I have an intermittant problem with starting the car. When the trying to start the car all electrics come on, no warning lights on dash or anything, but the starter motor doesn't kick in.

I've had the RAC out 3 times now. The last chap said there was no power getting to the starter motor. He uplugged two what looked like scart leads from the top of the engine and put them back in and the car started, but as soon as I got home and tried to start the car again, I was back to square one. Upluging and replacing the cables had no effect.

So, has anyone else had similar problems or can give me some advice on how to proceed please?

positive battery terminal will be loose, take it off put some copper grease on it and then tighen it up

that solved it for me
 
Years ago I had a Rover where the starter would only crank up when a mate was tapping the alternator with a hammer! I may be talking bull, I honestly cannot remember what was being tapped, but I am sure I replaced the alternator and the car was fine... Might be an alternator problem here?
 
Hello,

Thanks for all your help. It is now at the Fiat main dealer, so keep your fingers crossed. They have put it on the diagnostics thingy and found nothing and put all the updates on too, but of course it starts ok for them. God knows how much this is going to cost, I will keep you posted on how I get on.

I have the exact same problem. Ive had mye 1.4L 8v Dynamic for almost 2 years now, and it has happened only twice. happened for the second time last night. The first time it happened it fixed it self after an hour, but yesterday nothing worked.

Got it running by pushing it and turning the key whilst rolling. Strange since the starter motor does not give any sound when I turn the key at a stand still.

Any news from Fiat?
 
My car has been in the main Fiat dealer for five days and they can't find anything wrong with it. Oh of course it starts everyday there too.

Exactly the same that is happening to me. They are saying that it might be the starter relay.. But can this be since it starts smoothly every time now?

Mine has started every time too now, well since I had it back on Tuesday. All they did was clean those top two clips and did a CPU whatever that is and updated the computer, cost me £85 pounds too.
 
Okay.. This sounds strange, but I think I have a solution for this problem:

It happened to me again last night. Turned the key, and everything went on, except the starter engine. Just as before.

Then I tried something - I turned of everything which uses electricity. That is, I turned of the stereo, the lights, the fan/ventilation, etc..
Then I tried to start it.

And guess what: It did!!!

If anyone experiences this issue, please post if this also works for you!!
 
Mine turned out to be the main earth lead breaking up. Couldn't see anything because it was inside the sheath - only when the RAC guy got hold of it and it fell off. Easy 2 minute fix.
 
Since my car was in the fiat garage for five days fingers crossed it has been fine.
It is worth a try, I will give it a go, when or if it happens again.
 
This has happened to me as well on my 54 mkIIb punto. The first time the aa guy said it was the battery, so he charged it and the next time it died I had it replaced. Its just happened again less than a year later. Luckily I have a battery charger so no need to call out the aa again. I tried the whole switching everything off but that didnt work and I did a 140 mile trip yesterday. I'm guessing I have a problem with the alternator but would like to know what else it could be before taking it to the garage.

I took mine to the main fiat dealer, but of course it started every time and they had it for five days. If the fault doesn't occur while they have it, they told me that they could not find anything wrong with it. They apdated the computer and cleaned some leads and touch wood it is ok. Be preppared though it cost me £85.
 
I have had similar problems with my MK2b and tried hitting the starter moter which started turning it over but still no oomph. Remember if all else fails a bump start will work...

However anyone got a useful hint for starting a starter motor on your own?
